Oakland Criminal Defense Attorney Dennis Roberts, Two Kings, Banks and Bagism

Take into account the experiences of Dennis Roberts before he became an Oakland Criminal Defense Attorney. Important history has not only run concurrent to his career; his fingerprints are all over much of that history. In the early 1960s Dennis Roberts was in hot Georgia Courthouses wrestling the deeply entrenched and fiercely defended monolith of Southern tradition. In “The Great Pool Jump”, Oakland Criminal Defense stalwart Dennis Roberts, tells of his time in the civil rights movement and his internship with C.B. King, one of America’s greatest lawyers-that-you-have-never-heard-of. Dennis worked for C.B. King, a black lawyer, and an early pioneer of the ‘60s civil rights movement. Some called him, “The Other King.” His oratories were not only as poetic as those of Martin Luther King Jr.; C.B. King wove his famous sense of humor among his words, confounding his less fluent courtroom opponents.

To appreciate the courage shown by Dennis Roberts, one has to appreciate the 1963 Georgia state of mind. C.B. King was brutally beaten by a Law Officer, and death threats came regularly, a bit different than the life he now lives as an Oakland Criminal Defense Attorney. This was not a glamour gig providing water cooler fodder for the Marcia Clark hairdo debate. Nor was it the 1970s, when racial tolerance became fashionable, and John and Yoko waged their struggle by staying in bed for a week, occasionally giving an interview while wearing paper bags on their heads.

Dennis was outnumbered, fighting powerful men with deep resentment toward him. He had no crystal ball to assure him the movement he joined would move anything at all. Dennis’ career led him to represent many other activists from the growing, disparate groups in the country who dared to raise their voices against injustice. The courtroom escapades of the Chicago 8 defendants made farcical entertainment of court proceedings, drawing the nation’s attention to the trumped up charges of the allegations against them. Dennis Banks of the American Indian Movement turned to Dennis for representation, as did the Farm Workers Union.
